  Bio
ABOUT JOHN F. HELMINSKI, PSY.D., ABPP

I received my doctorate in clinical psychology in 1990 from Antioch/New England Graduate School. Soon after, my family and I moved to Minnesota where I began work at Children’s Hospitals and Clinics as a pediatric psychologist. I was employed at Children’s for seventeen years, and much of my work there focused on assessment and treatment of abused and traumatized children. I have always found helping children and their families a very rewarding part of being a psychologist.

I’ve maintained a part-time private psychology practice serving adults and children since 1989. However, in 2008 I moved to Cary, North Carolina to open a full-time practice where I provide therapy and assessment for adults and children with many different needs. The move from Minnesota to North Carolina was a major transition for our family and for my practice, but we are thoroughly enjoying the state’s people and lifestyle.

In addition to providing therapy and assessment, I have other areas of interest that I pursue in my work. An adoptive parent myself, I have found counseling families who have adopted or are considering adoption especially rewarding . In 2000 I was invited to Hangzhou, China to help establish a model orphanage in that city. The experience was one of the highlights of my career. Over the years I’ve also enjoyed offering seminars and workshops on a variety of mental health topics to counselors, social workers, attorneys, teachers, church outreach workers and parents.

I have always been interested in psychology’s applications to the law. My work in forensic psychology has given me opportunities to interact with the legal system as an evaluator, expert witness and consultant to attorneys regarding criminal, family and civil court matters. In 2007, I was board certified in forensic psychology through the American Board of Professional Psychology.

My professional memberships include the American Psychological Association, North Carolina Psychological Association, and the American Psychology-Law Society. I am a Fellow of the American Academy of Forensic Psychology.

In my free time I enjoy being outdoors biking, hiking or playing softball.
